Water and Drinking

Most chameleons will NOT drink water from a bowl, but I have seen few that have. When giving your chameleon drinking water it does two (2) things, first of all it keeps your chameleon hydrated, second is the obvious, it gives it water to drink. The only way that a chameleon will drink, is if he sees the water glistening on a leaf, or streaming down the leaf. To give your chameleon drinking water there are two (2) ways to do it: 1.) You simply take a spray bottle and mist your chameleon along with the leaves on your plant. Any water that gets on the chameleon will soak into his skin and keep him hydrated, while the other mist of water goes on the leaves of the plant. Your chameleon will see the water moving on the leaves and he will go drink the water from the leaves. 2.) Make a homemade water dripper out of a small butter container and make a pinhole in the bottom so when you fill it, it allows water to drip from inside the cup down to the leaves on the plant. These are both great methods, and I recommend doing both, each watering period. Make sure the water is room temperature, because if it is too cold your chameleon will NOT like it. Mist your chameleon at least three (3) times a day (as well as filling the dripper each time you mist). When using the spraying method; spray your chameleon and plant for about 20 seconds each misting time. However, too much water can be bad because it can create bacteria and health problems for your chameleon. Having too little water will also result in a sick and dehydrated chameleon. This is why it is important to figure out the proper amount of water your chameleon and its environment should get. You can make your misting schedule however you want, but this is my misting schedule:

1. About breakfast time. (9:00 AM - 10:00 AM)
2. At lunch time. (12:00 PM - 1:00 PM)
3. Early afternoon. (3:30 PM - 4:30 PM)
4. Before the chameleons bed time. (9:00 PM – 10:00 PM)

There are special misters that I mention later in the Temperature and Humidity section, and they work great for giving your chameleon drinking water as well as keeping them at the right temperature and keeping them hydrated. You can also use a humidifier, but just make sure that it is a COOL MIST humidifier, you should also talk to someone at your local pet store for more information, or you can e-mail me!
