Temperature and Humidity
Temperature in the cage varies for the different species of chameleons. Veiled Chameleons need a temperature between 75°F to 85°F (85°F being the basking temperature) with the humidity around 70%. But Veiled Chameleons can stand a temperature up to 95°F. The temperature for Panther Chameleons should be between 75°F to 90°F (90°F being the basking temperature) with the humidity about 80 - 95%. Horned Chameleons need a temperature to be between 70°F to 80°F (85°F being the basking temperature) with the humidity about 90%. Chameleons need a 10°F to 15°F temperature drop at night. To maintain the proper temperature and humidity, you must have temperature and humidity gauges inside the chameleon's cage.

Humidity is the amount of moisture that is in the air. Humidity is very important to a chameleon's health and the lack of humidity can cause dehydration. Chameleons use the moisture in the air for breathing, drinking, and skin absorbtion. To keep the humidity at an appropriate level, mist the chameleon and its cage three to four (3-4) times each day. If it is hard for you to maintain a constant humidity because the lack of warmth, then a humidifier will be needed to keep the temperature at the appropriate level. Humidifiers can be purchased from many pet stores and can be a little expensive. There are three (3) main ways to check your chameleon for dehydration:
1. Sunken in eyes.
2. Dry rough skin and/or wrinkles.
3. Darker colors than normal.
*NOTE: Sometimes chameleons get darker colors according to the temperature, and not because of dehydration. Another time when a chameleon becomes darker is when they are about to shed their skin.*
To re-hydrate your chameleon, please go to the Common Illnesses and Symptoms page.
