Different Species of Chameleons
There are over 135 species of chameleons that fall into one of the 6 genus categories.
I only have 3 listed here, but the following are the 3 most common chameleons that are
kept as pets. For more information on all the rest of the species of chameleons, please go to
my species list page.
Panther Chameleons

Panther Chameleons are egg laying chameleons that come from Madagascar. They are one of the most beautiful chameleons in my opinion, but that might be because I own one! :) Panther Chameleons like their temperature to be around 75°F to 90°F (90°F being the basking temperature) with the humidity about 80 - 95%. These are usually the most expensive chameleons to purchase but there are many successful dealers that have Panther Chameleons in the links section of my page.
Veiled Chameleons
(Chamaeleo calyptratus)

Veiled Chameleons are found mostly in Africa, parts of Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Veiled Chameleons are the chameleons with the arch-like, crested head. This arch is called a casque. Veiled Chameleons need a temperature between 75°F to 85°F (85°F being the basking temperature) with the humidity around 70%. But Veiled Chameleons can stand a temperature up to 95°F. These chameleons are one of the most popular chameleons as pets in the United States and it is more common to find one for sale in a pet store. Veiled Chameleons also tend to be one of the cheaper chameleons because there are more of them.
Jackson's Chameleons
(Chamaeleo jacksonii xantholophus)
Jackson's Chameleons are beautiful creatures that are found in East Africa, Tanzania and Kenya. Jackson's chameleons are oviparous (live-bearing). Males have three horns on their head while females do not. Jackson's Chameleons, as well as all other horned chameleons need a temperature to be between 70°F to 80°F (85°F being the basking temperature) with the humidity about 90%. Jackson's Chameleons are also pretty easy to find and some are even sold in pet stores.
